In this academic project, the task is to design a yoga retreat
hotel situated on a seaside plot in Kıyıkışlacık, Muğla.
The project begins with an existing one-story steel structure,
which must be incorporated into the design. The hotel is
required to include a dedicated yoga space, a lounge and bar
area, a restaurant, a lobby, a variety of room types,
back-of-house spaces, and outdoor areas. A critical aspect of
the project is adherence to hotel regulations and the
implementation of universal design principles to ensure accessibility.
The design must seamlessly integrate these functional spaces while
maintaining a focus on creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere
suitable for a yoga retreat. [ Interior Architecture ] [ School Project ]
The design concept for this yoga retreat hotel in Kıyıkışlacık, Muğla, draws inspiration from the physical form of quartz stone, a locally harvested mineral renowned for its healing properties in meditation and yoga practices. The project leverages this local element as a cornerstone of its architectural and aesthetic direction, emphasizing the connection between the structure and its natural surroundings.
The hotel’s architecture begins with a rectangular base that greets guests as they approach from the road, unfolding into irregular shapes that face the seaside, emanating from an inner garden. This L-shaped configuration of the building, with its expanding units, is strategically designed to maximize the range and perspective of the sea views. Key facilities, including yoga and meditation spaces, the restaurant, and guest rooms on the second floor, are situated within these outward-stretching sections.
The inner garden acts as a crucial transition zone, both horizontally and vertically, guiding guests through a naturalistic journey before reaching their final destination. This space, along with the majority of the hotel, features significant openings in the building envelope, creating a fluid boundary between indoor and outdoor areas. These thoughtful openings ensure that most spaces within the hotel can be experienced as both enclosed and open-air environments, enhancing the overall integration with the landscape and reinforcing the therapeutic ethos of the retreat.
